AI in Science: Why Hypothesis Testing Becomes a Bottleneck

Vladimir Lomtev•

It is useful to evaluate AI in science by the path from an idea to a verifiable conclusion. Getting to a hypothesis quickly is not enough: a team needs source data, a way to falsify it, and the ability to run a test. For a research leader, the practical question is: which stage is limiting delivery of an accepted result, and will automation help that stage specifically?

On October 8, 2026, the DeepMind Institute published an essay by Alex Imas and James Manyika on scientific workflows. Its main signal is that speeding up computational stages can be accompanied by constraints shifting to experimentation and validation. The essay is based on a September report, so this is a fresh public interpretation of data already collected. DeepMind Institute essay.

This material was prepared by AIrassvet for R&D leaders, engineering teams, and owners of enterprise knowledge bases. Source data were checked on October 10, 2026. Below is an analysis of the study and editorial suggestions for queue management; this article does not include its own lab experiment, customer case, or measured implementation effect. Medical decisions, biological protocols, and the choice of scientific model for a specific experiment remain the responsibility of domain specialists.

What exactly the researchers studied

The AI in Science: Early Insights report combines about 15 million Gemini interactions, a catalog of 2,690 specialized models, and a survey of 637 researchers. After classification, about 360,000 scientific interactions were identified in the logs: these are messages, not the same number of unique scientists. Corporate data were excluded from the log analysis. Original report, sections 2 and 6.

The More in Common survey was conducted online from July 27 to August 11, 2026, in the U.S. and the U.K. It used a screened nonprobability sample; the results are not weighted, and no margin of error is stated. The authors explicitly limit representativeness and causal conclusions. Russian labs cannot be assessed from these data. Methodology, appendix 3.

Separating the sources helps with a correct reading of the study. The logs describe observed use of one family of services; the survey captures participants’ self-assessments. Neither dataset is an independent test of a specific AIrassvet implementation.

Which results require cautious interpretation

The average self-reported time savings is about 6.9 hours per week. This is a participant response, not instrument-based timing and not guaranteed savings for a company. Report, section 5.

In the essay’s illustration, 43.5% of respondents report that the main bottleneck shifts to later stages, and 40.5% report an increase in the queue of unverified hypotheses; the illustration is based on a survey of 637 scientists. These responses may overlap, so they should not be added together. They do not establish that AI caused each such shift. DeepMind Institute, Downstream Workflow Frictions chart.

The managerial takeaway from the article is limited: generation, validation, and acceptance of the result should be monitored separately. This is an editorial recommendation that needs to be tested in your own process. The survey provides no basis for claiming revenue growth, budget reduction, or faster release of a Russian product.

How to describe a hypothesis-validation queue

Hypothesis-validation queue — a working list of proposals for which sufficient confirmation or falsification has not yet been obtained against a preselected criterion. We recommend separating this list from draft ideas and from already accepted conclusions. If everything is stored in one folder, the manager cannot see how much work is actually waiting on the assignee.

For your first observation, choose one flow: for example, proposals to change an engineering design. Describe when a candidate appears, the conditions for admission to testing, and the point at which it is closed. The observation period should be set by the team based on the length of its own work cycle; this article does not prescribe a universal pilot duration.

A candidate card can include the question, the source-data version, the origin of the suggestion, the claim being tested, the rejection criterion, the owner, and the next step. For a model output, it is advisable to save its designation and launch parameters, if available. Mark unavailable details as unknown so the next reviewer sees a gap instead of invented precision.

Below is the editorial team’s proposed tracking scheme. It is not a set of research results or an approved scientific standard.

Candidate status What we suggest storing What decision is needed
Draft idea Question and source of the suggestion Is it worth preparing a test
Ready for testing Data, assumptions, and rejection criterion Can the work be assigned to an executor
Waiting for resources Needed specialist, test bench, or compute Who can start and when
Under review Protocol version and observations Was the agreed testing method carried out
Accepted or rejected Basis for the decision and limits of applicability Can the conclusion be used further
Paused Missing data or unresolved question What will allow a return to the candidate

Distinguish between rejecting an idea and simply lacking the ability to test it right now. A pause because equipment is unavailable does not prove the hypothesis false. Likewise, a successful program launch does not confirm a product’s physical property: evidence matching the claim itself is required.

What to measure before buying a new AI tool

We recommend tracking candidate intake, test completion, the age of pending work, and the share of items returned for rework. It is also useful to separately capture the specialist’s active time and the calendar wait for resources. A quick calculation with long test waits and a long calculation without a queue require different decisions.

Define the unit of measurement in advance. If one team counts individual ideas and another counts combined research tasks, their volumes cannot be compared directly. A reformulation of the same hypothesis should ideally be linked to the original card; otherwise, growth in the number of records will look like growth in substantive work.

To compare options, we recommend keeping the acceptance rule the same. If the AI version allows a draft response, while the original process requires an agreed conclusion, comparing time is misleading. Costs for data preparation, validation, and corrections should be included in the process description, not presented as free work.

The team should choose numerical thresholds based on its own constraints and risks. This article does not provide data to set a universal acceptable age for a hypothesis or an error rate. General questions about compute costs are covered separately in the article on cloud and on-prem LLM: TCO analysis.

How to choose an automation area

If cards are being returned because the data is incomplete, a reasonable pilot candidate is preparing a research packet. An assistant can gather links to documents, highlight assumptions, and show missing fields. The decision on whether the packet is sufficient should be left to an authorized specialist and checked against agreed examples.

If the main expectation is tied to equipment, generating extra ideas can increase unfinished work. In that case, we suggest first looking at available resource planning, combining compatible tests, and queue priorities. Buying a more powerful language model on its own does not give the test stand any more time.

If a specialist spends time searching for prior results, a separate pilot could be knowledge base search with source citations. We suggest checking whether the system finds the correct version of a document and distinguishes an approved conclusion from a draft. A link to the found text does not yet replace an assessment of whether it applies to the new task.

Finally, if the process is fully computational, the check can be designed around a repeatable calculation, an independent dataset, or a formal verification method, depending on the discipline. A lab setup should not be transferred to any programming or math task. The domain team determines the specific method of confirmation.

Example of an engineering process and its limitations

Imagine a fictional team looking for ways to reduce a part’s weight. AI suggests geometry changes; the engineer checks constraints, prepares a calculation, and then decides whether physical testing is needed. This is a training scenario, not a client description and not an implementation result.

The useful automation target here is preparing a connected packet: the proposal, the source specification, calculation assumptions, and the basis for the decision. If the assistant suggested an option based on an outdated specification, the card should be sent back for preparation. If the specification version is current but the test stand is unavailable, the candidate may remain pending without a fitness conclusion.

Another edge case is possible: several similar candidates differ only in wording, but require a single test. We suggest first grouping them into a verifiable set while preserving the origin of each idea. Such grouping requires an engineer’s decision: apparently similar wording can hide different load conditions.

A pilot report is best ended with an explanation of what was learned. Show where waiting time was reduced, what remained unconfirmed, and which cards were sent back for revision. If there are no measurements, the pilot result remains unknown; having a working interface does not justify claiming savings or faster release cycles.

For a separate issue of the provenance of synthetic biological data, the site has an overview of SynthID Bio and AI protein labeling. Provenance labeling and verifying a scientific claim address different questions and do not replace each other.

Questions about AI in research and development

Does the study prove a causal increase in productivity?

No. The authors limit their conclusions to observed associations and self-reports; a causal effect requires a separate study. For a company, it is more useful to run its own comparison using the same acceptance criteria. Report limitations.

Should new idea generation be stopped?

There is no universal rule. We suggest looking at the ability to prepare and verify the next candidate, the priority of the research question, and the available resources. A new idea can still be valuable even with a queue if the team has explicitly decided to change priorities.

Can another AI check the first model’s answer?

In the proposed process, such a check can serve as an additional filter. Its result should be compared with independent data or a suitable domain-specific criterion. Agreement between two systems is not automatic permission to use the output in a product or experiment.

Where should a Russian R&D team start?

Choose one stream of hypotheses, describe the starting state and the closing criterion, then collect real observations about preparation, waiting, and verification. This information will help shape a pilot. The availability of specific foreign services and the model’s suitability need to be checked separately for your organization.

How AIrassvet helps organize a research workflow

This section covers the publisher’s own services. The AIrassvet website describes process audits, data preparation, enterprise knowledge bases, integration, and AI system testing. Applied to the workflow discussed here, an implementation task may include the following actions. Areas of work on the official website.

  • Describe the candidate’s transitions from proposal to verification and identify where the team is waiting for data or a resource.
  • Prepare a source document base with versions and links between the hypothesis, the calculation, and the conclusion.
  • Integrate an assistant to prepare the packet and test it on the team’s agreed tasks.

The first step is to choose one process, its current metrics, data sources, constraints, and acceptance criteria. Queue reduction, the quality of a scientific conclusion, and the economic impact must be confirmed by observations from a specific project; the article does not promise such results. Discuss the task.

What to change in the implementation brief

We suggest starting with this question: what unfinished work is preventing a verifiable conclusion? The answer will determine whether help is needed with data preparation, knowledge search, calculation, or organizing the check. Then you can choose a limited pilot and compare the full path to an accepted result using the same rules.

When updating the original report, it is worth revisiting the interpretation of its methodology and scope. The article’s practical recommendations should be refined based on your team’s observations. Comments on the facts can be sent through AIrassvet contacts; the current source review date is listed at the beginning of the material.
