Ollama and JSON Schema for Text Data Extraction

Ollama and JSON Schema for Text Data Extraction

To extract machine-readable fields from a request text, pass a schema to the local model in Ollama via the parameter format, turn off streaming responses, and verify the result with a separate validator. Structured output constrains the shape of the response, but the values still need to be checked against the source text.

Instructions for the IT specialist and the owner of the process being automated: we'll walk through one short request, get JSON, and stop processing if the data contract is violated. JSON is a text format for objects, arrays, and values; JSON Schema defines allowed fields and types. Connecting email, writing to a CRM, and OCR for scans require separate steps.

AIrassvet editorial team · Documentation updated: October 19, 2026.

The illustration shows a conceptual transfer of request data into a form with an unfilled date; this is not a screenshot of Ollama and not the output of a model.

Verification boundary: the editorial team ran local checks for syntax, the validator, and handling of a mocked HTTP response. The local LLM was not run for generation. Below is an integration example based on the official documentation; the expected JSON was created manually, and you still need to verify the extraction quality on your own requests.

Contents:

1. Prepare the local model

You need an installed and running Ollama instance, a loaded local text model, and Python 3 in a separate working environment. We are not covering model or hardware selection here: use an already available model whose terms of use are suitable for your company. Do not substitute a cloud version just because the name looks similar.

In the terminal, check the local service:

curl http://127.0.0.1:11434/api/tags

According to the Ollama List models reference, the response contains an array called models. Copy the exact name of the model you need from the name field. An empty array means there is nothing to choose yet; a connection error means the service is unavailable at that address. At this stage, the result should be an available service and an installed model name, not an answer to the request.

To validate data, install the library in the selected Python environment:

python -m pip install jsonschema

In the editorial review, jsonschema 4.26.0 was used; this is the verification version, not the minimum compatibility version installed here. The schema validation function and the validate method are described in the python-jsonschema documentation.

If local processing is required, check the server configuration itself: an address of 127.0.0.1 in the client does not yet prove that the selected model is local. In the Ollama FAQ you can find instructions for disabling cloud features with OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 and setting up the environment for different operating systems. After changing the configuration, restart the server itself. The script below does not change this setting. Access permissions, backups, and logs are also a separate task.

2. Define fields and missing values

Let's take a fictional request with no personal data:

Need 12 F-20 filters. We'll provide the delivery date later.

For the first example, four fields are enough. Do not expand the contract to every possible detail: first, make sure one task is handled clearly.

Field Allowed value Rule for the example
item Non-empty string or null The item named in the request
quantity Integer from 1 or null Quantity without assumptions
delivery_date Non-empty string or null The original date wording, with no calendar calculations
source_quote Non-empty string A verbatim fragment of the original request

null means no known value. This is different from the string "null" and from an empty string. A field can be required to appear in the object while still allowing null: this lets the application distinguish an unknown date from a missing key. See the JSON Schema null description.

In the schema below, required requires all four keys, while additionalProperties: false prohibits extra fields. For example, the model must not add a confirmed order status on its own. These restrictions are described in the JSON Schema object reference. They validate structure; the presence of an actual quote by itself does not confirm every extracted value.

3. Assemble the request and validator

Save the full code to the file extract_ticket.py. The schema is sent in format and repeated in the model instructions; this approach is described in Structured Outputs Ollama. The code does not include integrations that could create an order or modify an accounting system.

}

def parse_answer(envelope, text):
    if envelope.get("done") is not True:
        raise ValueError("Response not complete")
    if envelope.get("done_reason") != "stop":
        raise ValueError("Unsupported completion reason")
    result = json.loads(envelope["message"]["content"])

        data=json.dumps(payload, ensure_ascii=False).encode("utf-8"),
        headers={"Content-Type": "application/json"}, method="POST"
    )
    opener = build_opener(ProxyHandler({}))
    with opener.open(request, timeout=60) as response:
        envelope = json.load(response)
    return parse_answer(envelope, text)

def main():
    if len(sys.argv) != 3:
        raise ValueError("Usage: python extract_ticket.py MODEL_NAME ticket.txt")
    text = Path(sys.argv[2]).read_text(encoding="utf-8").strip()
    if not text or len(text) > 12000:
        raise ValueError("Text must be between 1 and 12000 characters")
    result = extract(sys.argv[1], text)
    print(json.dumps(result, ensure_ascii=False, indent=2))

if __name__ == "__main__":
    try:
        main()
    except Exception as error:
        print("Unhandled: " + type(error).__name__, file=sys.stderr)
        sys.exit(1)

In the request stream: false means a single complete response is returned. According to the description of /api/chat, the assistant text is inside the message object, and completion is reflected by done and done_reason. That is why the code first parses the outer API response, then the JSON string in message.content. You must not pass the entire server response to the request schema validator.

The example uses its own limits: a 60-second timeout, input up to 12,000 characters, and acceptance only of completion reason stop. These are settings for the training integration, not Ollama limits and not a speed guarantee. If the model ends the response for another reason, handle that separately; you cannot automatically accept a partial object. The value temperature: 0 reduces variability according to the Ollama documentation, but it is not a guarantee of truth or bit-for-bit repetition.

ProxyHandler({}) prevents use of environment proxies for this request to the local address. The handler and timeout behavior is documented in Python urllib.request. This client setting does not control the network behavior of the Ollama server.

4. Run it on the training request

Create ticket.txt next to the code in UTF-8 with a single line from step 2. Run the script, replacing the MODEL_NAME argument with the exact local name from step 1:

python extract_ticket.py MODEL_NAME ticket.txt

The expected result below was written manually; it is not a saved model response:

{
  "item": "F-20 filters",
  "quantity": 12,
  "delivery_date": null,
  "source_quote": "We need 12 F-20 filters. We will share the delivery date later."
}

The name may be normalized grammatically, for example to "F-20 filters"; decide in advance whether your process allows that. The date here cannot be filled in as today's date. The phrase "we will share later" does not contain a delivery date, so under the proposed rule null is required.

A successful technical run means the code exited without errors, printed an object with four keys, the validator accepted the types, and a non-empty quote was found in the source text. After that, a person checks the part number, quantity, and absence of a date. Technical success does not equal a confirmed order.

Then change the input: remove the quantity; add two conflicting dates; replace the number with "several." The suggested behavior is null for any unknown or ambiguous field. These are scenarios for your model check, not the results of an editorial run. If the fields are consistently taken from a standard form, a conventional parser or integration may be simpler than an LLM. For scans, first you need a separate OCR and document recognition step.

5. Troubleshoot errors

If an error occurs, the script returns a non-zero exit code and the error class name in stderr. There is no accepted object in stdout. If the calling system ignores the exit code, it may mistakenly treat empty output as a processed request — this must be fixed before automation is connected.

Symptom What to check Next action
Connection error Ollama availability and the local address Go back to /api/tags, do not repeat the whole chain blindly
HTTP error Exact model name, request, and server response Analyze the cause; do not switch to the cloud automatically
JSONDecodeError Response completeness and the contents of message.content Save diagnostic data in an allowed location, stop the transmission
ValidationError Types, missing keys, extra fields Fix the contract or request after reviewing the source text
ValueError Response completion or the presence of a quote Check the reason in controlled diagnostics
Schema accepted, value is incorrect Value matches the source text Pass it to a person; the validator does not prove that

The code intentionally does not print the original request in the error message and does not perform automatic retries. Production use requires a separate protected diagnostic path: the class name points in the right direction, but it does not replace root-cause analysis.

What the editors actually verified: compilation of the Python code shown, schema correctness, acceptance of the prepared object, and rejection of invalid types, an extra field, a missing key, an empty or irrelevant quote, and an incomplete response. The parsing of a stubbed response through an HTTP handler without a model network call was also tested. These checks confirm the code’s behavior on prepared data; they do not measure LLM accuracy, speed, memory usage, or resistance to instructions in the request. Parameters and request order were cross-checked against the documentation as of October 19, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is JSON mode different from JSON Schema?

In Ollama format: "json" sets the JSON format, while the schema object in format describes the required fields and types. For passing a request to the next program, an explicit contract is more useful. Both options are shown in the official guide.

Can I use the same example in Ollama Cloud?

According to the Structured Outputs documentation as of the verification date, Ollama’s cloud service does not support this feature. This guide is intended for a local server and a local model. Before switching environments, check the documentation and access terms again.

Why use a separate validator if the schema has already been passed to the model?

The application needs its own boundary check: the response may have been cut off, the contract may have changed, or the calling code may receive a different format. The validator checks the object on the consumer side. Fact-checking against the source remains a separate operation.

Can I create a CRM record right away?

This example does not include that operation. First, define how to handle unknown fields, duplicates, and human approval. The full workflow is covered separately in the article on processing email inquiries and CRM integration.

Where AIrassvet helps

Data preparation, local LLM deployment, and integration with business systems are part of AIrassvet’s focus areas. For a field-extraction task, the work may include aligning the request contract, configuring processing in the chosen environment, and connecting verified data to the next stage of the process. This is a description of the work areas; the compatibility of a specific model and the quality of its extraction are assessed separately.

The first step is to choose one process, its current handling method, data sources, constraints, and the acceptance criterion for a satisfactory result. For this example, it is useful to decide in advance who confirms an unknown date and which quantity errors are unacceptable. Discuss the task.

Next step

Start with a sample text: define four fields, pass the schema in format, then parse message.content separately and validate the object. After the technical run, compare the values with the source and review ambiguous requests. This sequence will give a clear result for each stage and show where a person is needed before connecting writes to production systems.
